Broadway stars will discuss their spiritual influences as part of the Broadway Bares Soul series.
The Sheen Center has announced the lineup of fall and winter programming set for its 2017-18 season.
The season opens with a coproduction of the New York premiere of Tectonic Theater Project's Uncommon Sense, a multimedia play written by Anushka Paris-Carter and Andy Paris (also directing) about autism and the spectrum of love. The show will have a five-week limited engagement from October 25-November 26, featuring talkbacks after the Saturday matinees beginning November 4, and a special panel, Autism and Faith: Animating Hope, on November 5.
The Sheen Center will also be hosting the series Broadway Bares Soul: An Intimate Evening of Song & Spirit, in which Broadway stars are invited for 90-minute interviews, featuring discussion about their formative influences, their life trajectories, and how their careers have been shaped by their spiritual and social/political worldview. Guests will also be invited to perform two or three songs of their choice. The interviews will be conducted by Edward L. Beck, priest, author, playwright, and CNN Faith and Religion commentator. Scheduled participants include Grammy, Emmy, and Tony nominee Vanessa Williams (September 9), Tony winner Kelli O'Hara (October 3), and four-time Tony nominee Raúl Esparza (December 14).
Theatrical offerings will also include two readings of new plays this fall: Daylight by Bill Cain about Dorothy Day starring Ann Dowd (The Handmaid's Tale), and The Wars of Dagger John by Turlough McConnell about 19th century Archbishop "Dagger John" Hughes. In the Black Box will be Loveless Texas (September 6-24), The Mecca Tales(October 20-November 4), Hold These Truths (a one-man play starring Joel de la Fuente of The Man in the High Castle, December 2-20), and The Enlightenment of Mr. Mole (based on The Wind in the Willows, adapted and directed by B.H. Barry, December 27-31).
Additionally, Drama Desk winner Andréa Burns (On Your Feet!) will return to the Sheen Center with her concerts Latin Broadway Party (September 18) and Broadway Holiday Party (December 11).
